Some years ago, I saw a picture that intrigued me. The headline in Reddit read, “Every winter Turks and Bulgarians hang used coats in trees for the homeless.” The photo was eerily beautiful in image and idea. It sparked my soul.
I thought, we could do that in Austin, and we did! A group I belong to, WILL, Women in Leadership Legacy, were responsive to the idea and we began the practice a few years ago. Wrapping trees in coats along a well-traveled road was fun. We realized that this little effort was not solving any big problem of keeping those in need warm on a cold night, but our hope was the unusual sight would stick with passers-by and get them thinking. I am toasty in my coat, in my car but there are folks out there freezing. What can I do?

Follow- up for those interested—the trees were bare the next morning!

What a great idea.
